Schedule Management Health Check

For each question below, please select the scenario that describes your current situation best

  1. Processes and Toolsets
  2. An agreed schedule management process, consistently used across an organisation, provides a sound foundation for schedule-based decision making.   An appropriate choice of schedule management toolset will increase efficiency and effectiveness.  Confused or inconsistent data can undermine confidence, leading to poor decision making.

  3. Schedule structure
  4. A schedule underpinned by an agreed structure ensures clear accountability and increases the likelihood that delivery of the full scope of work will be achieved.  A lack of structure can lead to deliverables and activities being overlooked and objectives not being achieved.

  5. Schedule logic
  6. A fully logic- linked schedule, free of unnecessary constraints, allows more accurate and confident forecasting of achieving objectives.  Having a critical path allows focus on key activities, increasing likelihood of success.  Lack of logical links and a critical path can lead to attention being focussed on the wrong areas.

  7. Schedule Resourcing
  8. Having a clear link between the Organisation Breakdown Structure and deliverables, allows effective management of resources. Without comprehensive resourcing, over/under allocation of resources is uncertain, reducing confidence in the ability to deliver as required.

  9. Schedule Integration
  10. Consistently capturing interdependencies and ensuring milestones are linked through all levels of schedules ensures accountability, and enables identification of areas where problems may occur and appropriate actions to be taken.  Without a clear understanding of interdependencies, planning is ineffective, resulting in an unrealistic or undeliverable schedule.

  11. Schedule Management
  12. Having an agreed and controlled baseline enables progress tracking against initial approved estimates and a target to drive towards. Impacts of changes can be seen and articulated, and corrective action taken as required. Poor schedule management results in inaccurate forecasts, undermining stakeholder confidence in delivery.

  13. Basis of Estimates
  14. A robust approach to estimating provides a more realistic and achievable schedule, increasing stakeholder confidence.  Without documenting assumptions and the estimating techniques used,  the impact of changes will not be understood or alterations to the schedule justifiable.

  15. Reporting and Governance
  16. Having a consistent approach to reporting and governance ensures that  appropriate information is provided to inform decision making at relevant levels in a timely fashion. This enables appropriate action to be taken to ensure successful outcomes are achieved.  Unclear reporting and governance can lead to decisions being based on inaccurate information and management attention being focussed in the wrong place.

  17. Schedule and risk alignment
  18. No project operates without risk. Therefore, it is important to consider what could  impact your schedule and plan activities to mitigate those risks.

  19. Culture
  20. Schedule management should be a fundamental part of your management system.  Only when fully embedded, will all the benefits of schedule management be realised.  Lack of senior leadership will undermine efforts made by the rest of the team.

  21. Knowledge, skills and experience
  22. Having the correct knowledge, skills, experience and specialism is fundamental to successful and effective schedule management.  Lack of training and guidance will cause poor process implementation and ineffective use of toolsets.
